Max Carey, born on January 11, 1890, in Terre Haute, Indiana, was a skilled outfielder known for his exceptional speed. Before joining the Pirates, Carey attended St. Mary’s College, where he played baseball and football. His potential was soon recognized, and he was quickly signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1910. Carey’s debut in the major leagues marked the beginning of an illustrious career.
On that summer day in 1913, the Pirates faced off against the Philadelphia Phillies. It was a highly anticipated game, with a buzzing atmosphere in Forbes Field. Both teams were determined to secure a victory, each relying on their star players to lead them to success.
Carey, batting leadoff, stepped up to the plate, hoping to kick-start his team’s offense. Although he wasn’t able to connect with any pitches, his exceptional base-running skills allowed him to reach the scoring positions consistently. Carey’s remarkable ability to steal bases and capitalize on scoring opportunities soon became apparent, much to the frustration of the Phillies.
In the first inning, Carey reached first base on an error by Phillies’ third baseman Dave Bancroft. Showing his lightning-fast speed, Carey immediately stole second base. The following hitter managed to drive Carey home, giving the Pirates an early lead. This pattern continued throughout the game, with Carey consistently scoring runs despite not registering a hit.
In the top of the third inning, Carey once again found himself on base after drawing a walk. The Pirates’ subsequent batters were able to drive Carey home, extending their lead. In the fifth inning, with Carey on second base after stealing it once again, a timely hit from teammate Bill McKechnie allowed Carey to score his third run of the game.
As the game progressed, Carey’s baserunning prowess continued to astound both teams’ supporters. Despite his inability to register a hit, Carey used his incredible speed and keen base-running instincts to manipulate the game in the Pirates’ favor. Whether it was stealing bases or taking advantage of shaky Phillies’ defense, Carey was an unstoppable force.
In the ninth inning, Carey’s opportunity to touch home plate came once again. After reaching third base on a teammate’s double, Carey’s speed allowed him to cross home plate for the fifth and final time that day. Despite his hitless performance, Carey’s contributions were invaluable in securing the Pirates’ victory, with a final score of 11-7.
