On July 25, 1934, a tragic event took place in Austria that would shake the political landscape of the country and have far-reaching consequences. This date marked the assassination of Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss by Nazis, an act that would leave a lasting impact on Austria’s history.
Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss, a prominent figure in Austrian politics, was a staunch authoritarian and a strong advocate for maintaining the independence of Austria amidst growing threats from Nazi Germany. He had come to power in 1932 as the leader of the conservative Christian Social Party and had implemented drastic measures to combat the rising influence of the Austrian Nazi Party.
The assassination of Dollfuss was carried out by a group of Austrian Nazis, led by a Communist named Otto Planetta. Planetta and his accomplices launched an attack on the Chancellery building in Vienna, where Dollfuss was working at the time. They intended to overthrow the government and establish a Nazi regime in Austria.
Despite being heavily outnumbered by the attackers, Dollfuss and his loyalists put up a brave resistance. Tragically, the Chancellor was fatally wounded during the assault and succumbed to his injuries later that day. The Nazis’ attempt to seize power had failed, but the repercussions of this heinous act would reverberate throughout Austria and beyond.

The assassination also had international repercussions. It drew attention to the growing threat of Hitler’s Nazi regime and served as a wake-up call for other nations. The international community condemned the act and expressed support for Austria’s struggle against fascism.
