Freed American slaves form Liberia

In the chronicles of American history, the role of freed American slaves in the formation of Liberia cannot be overlooked. This monumental event happened on August 15, 1824, and its repercussions have significantly shaped the world we live in today.

This geographical position played a major role in the successful establishment of the free state.

Upon arrival on the African continent, the former American slaves were faced with a multitude of challenges. Despite the adversities, they were determined to set up a democratic republic styled after the American model. This was their chance to actualize what they had dreamt while in captivity: freedom, prosperity, and the inherent right to self-determination. On 8/15/1824, their dream became reality.

The capital city, Monrovia, was christened after James Monroe, fifth President of the United States and a stout supporter of the colonization. With the governing structure in place and the city named, Liberia was on its way to becoming a representative and significant state on the African continent.

In the subsequent years, Liberia evolved to develop its own unique identity, although marked by American influences. It became an emblem of hope and freedom, not only for the freed American slaves who established it but also for many others who sought refuge there.
