World History
On September 17, 1960, a historic incident happened which has greatly impacted the socio-economic environment of Cuba and America. This dynamic event was none other than the nationalization of American-owned banks in Cuba. The nationalization of these institutions marked an era of strained relations between Cuba and the United States that persists until this day.
The move by the then Cuban administration was seen largely as an effort to rein in economic control which was previously dominated by American interests. It was a significant chain of events that would set in motion decades of tension and political upheaval.
The relationship between the United States and Cuba was notably strained after Fidel Castro came into power. Castro was well-known for his Communist ideologies, a political standpoint fiercely opposed by the United States. The nationalization of American-owned banks was a poignant warning sign of Cuba’s move towards Communism. It fueled Washington’s fear about the spread of Communism into the Western Hemisphere and provided a premise for the embargo the US would soon place on Cuba.
This monumental action aimed to transfer the ownership of several banking institutions from private American entities to the Cuban government. Notably, this included the First National City Bank of New York and Chase National Bank, two of the largest American banks operating in Cuba at the time. The Cuban government offered compensation for the banks; however, the terms were considered unacceptable by the US, leading to a further escalation of tensions.
The nationalization of the American-owned banks in Cuba was covered in the International media, widely perceived as Cuba’s increasing isolation from the Western world, and in particular from the United States. This was arguably one of the most significant events that triggered the US to adopt its strategic economic and commercial embargo against Cuba, which lasts even today.
