Flashback to December 12
World History
1979
Near the coast of Ecuador, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurs. At least 600 people killed, 20,000 injured. The earthquake was felt strongly in many parts of southern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. A 3-metre tsunami along the Colombian coast caused deaths and damage on Gorgona Island, and caused extensive damage to most port cities along the coast of Colombia from Buenaventura south.
Read moreNear the coast of Ecuador, a tremendous event unfolded on December 12, 1979, when a significant magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred. This catastrophic event led to the unfortunate loss of at least 600 lives and left approximately 20,000 people injured. This calamitous incident was powerfully experienced across substantial swathes of southern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, indelibly marking the day in the annals of both countries’ history.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Ecuador’s coast, placing it in a position to cause significant damage across a wide geographical swath. Earthquakes of this scale are capable of causing catastrophic destruction, and this 7.7 magnitude quake was no exception. The aftermath painted a grim picture of displaced communities, destroyed infrastructure, and upturned lives that attested to the tremendous force of nature and the inherent vulnerability of human settlements in the path of such outcomes.
In addition to the earthquake, the day also witnessed a devastating tsunami that rose to a height of 3 metres along the Colombian coast. This secondary disaster only served to compound the despair, causing further deaths and damage on Gorgona Island, a prime tourist location famous for its diverse wildlife and pristine beaches. The beautiful island was instantaneously transformed into a scene of profound human suffering and material destruction.
Moreover, port cities along Colombia’s coast suffered extensive damage due to the mighty wave’s impact. Stretching from the bustling port city of Buenaventura in the north to the southernmost coastline of Colombia, the tsunami left a destructive trail. These port cities, which play a crucial role in the national economy and local livelihoods, witnessed an astounding level of destruction that would take years to fully recover.
The 1979 Ecuador coastline earthquake and Colombian tsunami stood as stark reminders of the unpredictable, catastrophic power of tectonic activities, underlining the necessity for robust disaster management protocols. They also exposed the evident seismic vulnerability of the affected regions, particularly those communities nestled on the coastline, revealing a compelling case for a strengthened and frequent seismic risk assessment and, consequentially, better urban planning in the region.
Reconstruction and recovery efforts in the affected areas were immense challenges that required significant investment, both in terms of human resources and capital. They called for efficient disaster management, engagement of local communities, and support from international organizations. It took several years for the impacted regions to show signs of successful recovery and restoration.
Despite the gravity of the tragedy, the event provided valuable insights for geologists and seismologists, who were able to gather key data to further understand earthquakes and tsunamis. This crucial information has proven to be foundational for later research, serving to strengthen regional and global strategies for earthquake and tsunami preparedness.
Even today, many in southern Colombia and Ecuador remember the 1979 earthquake and tsunami vividly, reflecting the deep scars the tragedy left behind. The memory of these events serves as a powerful reminder of the need for preparedness, resilience, and community cooperation when faced with the unpredictable, destructive power of nature.
