The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is established.

One of the primary functions of HUD is the administration of federal aid to local housing agencies (HAs) that manage housing for low-income residents at rents they can afford. This includes initiatives like Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP), Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, and Public Housing Program, among others—all born from the desire to assist those facing challenges in securing a home in the intensifying urban landscape of the U.S.

Since its inception, HUD has been instrumental in offering solutions for low-income families and tackling issues related to homelessness in the U.S. Using indicators such as housing cost burdens, housing quality, management performance, tenant income, and many others, HUD continually assesses and responds to America’s housing needs. In addition, it was responsible for the development of federal regulations and guidelines that have shaped housing discrimination laws and related policies over the years.

HUD’s signature achievement lies in the Fair Housing Act (1968), which it has vigilantly enforced to prevent housing discrimination. This federal law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, and national origin.
