Flashback to August 24
American History

On August 5th, 1882, a significant event in the history of the global energy industry occurred – the establishment of Standard Oil of New Jersey. This historic undertaking dramatically transformed the global scenario of oil and gas businesses, setting a new era of industrial development in motion. Throughout this piece, we will be focusing on the significance and the historical impacts of this ground-breaking establishment that forever altered the landscape of the global oil industry.
Standard Oil of New Jersey started its journey as part of the Standard Oil Trust set up by business magnates like John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler. Utilizing the rampantly increasing demand for kerosene and lubricants, these visionaries built an all-encompassing empire which, at its peak, was responsible for refining around 90% of the global oil output. Harnessing the potential of New Jersey’s business-friendly laws, the sister company of the Standard Oil Trust was named Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, a name that would ring through the centuries as a symbol of endurance and industrial revolution.
Standard Oil of New Jersey’s establishment marked the beginning of the vertical integration business model in the oil industry. The company exercised control over every phase of the industry, from drilling and refining to distribution and sales. This helped them to maintain control over prices and quality, allowed for efficient use of resources, and largely reduced the risks associated with the usually volatile oil market. Such a comprehensive business model was unheard of then and largely contributed to the success and eventual monopoly of Standard Oil.
One integral part of Standard Oil of New Jersey’s success was its continuous focus on innovation. The company not only revolutionized the oil industry with its business practices, but also invented and perfected several procedures and technologies that greatly benefitted the industry as a whole. From developing the first modern oil refinery to establishing the first international oil pipeline, the list of the company’s contributions to the industry is endless.
The establishment of Standard Oil of New Jersey not only reshaped the American oil industry, but it also reciprocally influenced international oil politics. As its influence expanded over the years, the company established a strong presence in Latin America, the Middle East, and other parts of the globe. This global expansion underlined the dominance of American oil companies in the international market during the late 19th and early 20th century.
However, despite its numerous accomplishments and contributions to the industry, the company’s control over the industry eventually led to its downfall. Accused of monopolistic practices and violating the Sherman Antitrust Act, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey was dissolved in 1911 by a landmark decision of the Supreme Court. Despite its dissolution, the legacy of this industry giant continues to influence the industry and the company’s various offshoots, including Exxon and Mobil, continue to dominate the energy market today.
Standard Oil of New Jersey’s establishment played a significant role in shaping the oil industry. It’s a testament to the company’s forethought and firm business practices that the effects of its establishment reverberate through the industry even today. From revolutionizing business models to pioneering innovative technologies, the company’s imprint on the oil and gas industry will always be remembered in the annals of global energy history.
From humble beginnings in New Jersey, Standard Oil rose to the pinnacle of the oil industry to become a central player in the global energy scene. Whether seen as an industry innovator or the progenitor of controversial corporate practices, the story of Standard Oil of New Jersey exemplifies the powerful impact that businesses can have on global industries and economies. On remembering the anniversary of this monumental establishment, we recognize the profound changes that this company has brought to our way of life.
